How to Find (& Access) Ilyn Toth’s Lair in Baldur’s Gate 3

Quick Links

During your adventure in Baldur’s Gate 3, you will encounter a secret cellar in Blighted Village’s apothecary. However, to open this secret passage, you must do a few tasks before entering Ilyn Toth’s lair. Ilyn Toth is not a living character, and he is only referred to via his journal, which isn’t found that easily.

The Cellar in the Apothecary is behind a counter within the shop. Finding the entrance can be tricky, but you should see a wooden hatch outline light up once you are near. If you want the precise location, the secret entrance to the cellar is X:32 Y:379. Once you locate the secret passage, drop down to the cellar, where you will find a bookcase.

Once you drop down to the cellar, you will find several potions and herbs you can loot. Amongst the loot, there will also be a Doctor’s Log to the left; make sure to grab it for later use. Move towards the bookcase; however, you will not be able to move it normally or do an Investigation check on it. Having said that, with a successful roll, you will be able to spot some scratch marks on the floor, indicating that the bookcase can open. Unless you have a strong companion in your party, you will need to look for a lever that opens the bookcase.

To the left of the bookcase, there will be a stack of boxes that you can throw. Get rid of the box at the very top, which will reveal the lever that opens the bookcase. Use the lever to reveal a secret passage that leads further into the cave.

Once you enter the cave, you will notice some undead enemies, which you can kill using Cleric attacks. However, if you do not have a Cleric build in Baldur’s Gate 3 or a companion with Cleric abilities, you should attack them from a distance. Once you get rid of the undead enemies, proceed ahead, and you will see an Ornate Mirror to the east. Interacting with the mirror will result in it asking you a few questions.

Before you answer any of the Ornate Mirror’s questions, create a separate save file so you can answer the mirror’s questions again in case of failure.

Also, read the Doctor’s Log you grabbed earlier before talking to the Ornate Mirror, as one of the answers to the questions can be found within it.
