To get the house in Skyrim‘s Whiterun for free, you must speak to Proventus when he’s about to either sleep or get up from bed. His chambers can be found in the Jarl’s Quarters of Dragonsreach keep. Make sure to position the screen as close as possible to one of the wardrobes in his bedroom and that you have enough money to buy the house in Whiterun in the first place.

While Proventus is beside his bed, interact with him to open the dialogue options and select “I’d like to purchase a house in the city.” After he offers Breezehome for 5000 Gold, proceeds with the purchase but immediately open one of the nearby wardrobes while he finishes his dialogue. If you can quickly open the container before hearing a “key jingle,” the attempt is successful. However, if the wardrobe cannot be accessed before Proventus gives the Dragonborn the key, you must reload their save and try again.

After successfully opening the wardrobe, place all the Gold previously earmarked to buy the house inside. Once exiting the inventory screen, you should still receive the key to Breezehome from Proventus. Now, reopen the wardrobe to retrieve the gold. After you have pulled off this exploit, you can access your new house in Whiterun for free.
