Love Island USA star Carsten “Bergie” Bergersen was a football star during his college days. Since entering the villa as a bombshell, Bergie has stood out from other Love Island USA season 5 stars. The 23-year-old who explained he was on the show to find true love exhibited charming behavior, making a breath of fresh air for the franchise. While many Love Island girls spoke of their attraction to bad boys, Bergie found it hard to create romantic relationships.
However, spending more time in the house improved his confidence, and he finally found a strong connection with Taylor Smith. Despite entering the show as an underdog, Bergie’s sweet behavior and wholesome relationship with Taylor have spurred the duo to become one of the favorites to win the whole season.
Bergie played football for Park High School Varsity and Dakota State University while at the institutions. The Dakota State Athletics team, also called the Trojans and Lady T’s, primarily competes in the North Star Athletic Association (NSAA). The conference has seven full-member institutions: Bellevue University, Dakota State University, Dickinson State University, Maryville State University, Valley City State University, Viterbo University, and Waldorf University. Also, the Dakota State University teams are very competent and successful, winning 56 conference championships. The university has also produced star athletes, with 112 athletes named NAIA All-Scholar athletes in the institution’s history.

Bergie played as an outside linebacker and wide receiver for the Park High School Varsity football team. As an outside linebacker, Bergie focused mainly on the defensive aspect of the game. His OLB role meant he became responsible for disrupting pass attempts by the opponent’s offensive team. As a wide receiver, Bergie switched to an offensive position and was responsible for catching forward passes from his quarterback. To do this, he had to be one of the fastest players on the field. For the Park High School Varsity football team, Bergie donned the number 35 jersey.
During his time with the Dakota State University football team, Bergie played as a defensive back. As a defensive back, Bergie was concerned mainly with the defensive aspect of the game. They play furthest back from the line of the scrimmage. For Dakota State University, Bergie donned the number 10.
Bergie played football throughout high school and college. According to his Hudl page, the Love Island star started playing football in 2015. However, with his recent advent in the Love Island villa, the Minnesota native seems to have switched from defending balls to protecting his romance with Taylor, as the duo look set to be one of the favorites to win Love Island USA season 5.
